Training for a mountain bike race. Any tips for a first timer?
I've been an occasional recreational rider for years but this year I signed up for my first race. I have no idea how to train for it. I've been doing some spinning at the gym, strength training and a bit of running.
Any tips, good web sites/training programs would be appreciated!

The best thing to do is just go riding. Try to ride on terrain similar to the race.
Then use the race as a learning experience.
I’d take a look at this article for fun:

the first thing is your frame of mind, don’t go into it expecting to win, just expect to finish. Second is strength, if you develop your legs with strength training then you will likely do well on climbs. Third, have the right equipment including your bike. Fourth, get out and ride (use ALL of that equipment) give yourself a flat and fix it with a Co2 inflator on the trail, have a chain break on you and FIX it on the trail and so on and so on so when you are actually in that race you know how to do it and you don’t have any surprises! Fifth, Get out and ride!

Wow! Good answers so far.
Just have FUN
Know your bike
If you can, practice the course
don’t try anything new, this is NOT the time to try clipless pedals
Make sure your bike is in its best shape.
Remember to save your number, you’ll want to keep it, write down your time, the date, the course, weather if its important
Have some one take pictures for you.
WATCH OUT for the start. Many people will hammer away right at the beginning, lay back, that’s when the most accidents happen.
as ALWAYS, look where you want to go, never stare at things you want to avoid, like rocks and stumps.

Up hill as much as you can. It will get your lungs ready for racing.

Before your first race pre-ride the course several times if you can so you have an idea of the layout. Once you know what to expect try riding it at a quick pace, don’t go out at a blistering pace, doing this will help learn where to brake, corner and recover. Come race day you should have a good idea of the course, now on race day you will have racers around you and the learning you did on the course will help keep the trail surprises to a min. and with racers in front and behind you don’t need to be learning the trail now. Any training should of been done already, so on race day get there early warm up some, start hydrating a day or two before the race. The day before the race take a short ride with a few short hard efforts to open up your lungs, don’t wear yourself out. For your first race don’t worry about winning just finish strong. Your first year racing there will be a learning curve as you will soon find out, be critical of where your strong and weak points are and work on them.
