As long as your mountain bike is in good working order it will probably be OK for a 60 mile ride. Unless you must ride on dirt roads to get to your friends place, you probably don't want to do the ride with knobbie tires. I'd reccomend you get some slick, road tires for your mountain bike.

There are different varieties of GPS units. Most cycling oriented GPS products track your location and tell your how far you've been. You don't want this type! Nor do you want the type that points you in the direction of your next waypoint. You want a road atlas type of GPS that will show you where you are on a map and tell you where to turn to get to your friends house. Be sure you get one that will allow you to state a preference for secondary roads. Otherwise, the GPS will be trying to get you onto interstate highways.

Hope this helps.

This is one of our winter stand by mountain bike trails just east of Reno - Tahoe - Nevada. It is usually open year round, and rideable during the summer, just hot. The bikes being followed are Cannondale Scalpel, and Cannondale Rize. I am filming with a Cannondale Rize. Go to www.greatbasinbicycles.com for the topo GPS trail map with directions for this trail and many others in the area. The music was provided by John C. Clarke at www.JohnClarkeMusic.com

  1. Print out a map and use your bike computer to keep track of how far you have between turns. Hard to miss a road sign on a bicycle. If you bike has knobbies change them to a comfort style tire and max pressure, they will be liter.

  2. If you can afford it, get some “road” tires that are high pressure like 100 psi. If you have to use the knobby tires at least pump them up to 60-70 psi. The road tires will be your best friends. There are GPS navigators made for bicycles and they cost more than $350. Make some good maps, study them, and take them with you. Remember to take all the tools you need in case you have a flat tire. Sixty miles is gonna take you almost all day (7hrs. including all rest stops) to pedal. You will need to stop and eat and drink about four times. Start your adventure early in the morning to be sure you have plenty of daylight. Have you been training by riding distances for two hours and more? If you are not used to it, the seat can become your enemy in just 90 minutes. A helmet and padded gloves may save you grief. Your friend will be impressed!

  3. no man i ride 60miles a day some times and went 100 one time so no you can go to http://www.maquest.com and if you know your friend address then you put your address and his in and it might tell you a closer way it did when i went to see my girlfriend
