First suggestion: get rid o that Walmart death trap…
Do not ride it until it has been tuned by a pro…
And upgrade asap my suggestions are anything “Specialized”…
Gary fisher…
Trek of course
go to a store and choose depending on your budget…
They have very good bikes at somewhat affordable prices…
Get hydraulic disc brakes
that’s it…

I hate to say this but Foes Rider is probably right. Those Walmart Mongooses are a plague on mountain biking, they look very convincing (they’re quite pretty from a distance) if you don’t know what you are looking at but what you’ve actually got is a pile of very shoddy components thrown together as quickly as possible to look like a bike.
Even the most determined bicycle mechanic can’t do much with bikes like that, they are just plain bad. You might be lucky and have one that was built correctly but it’s not worth spending any money on upgrades unless you are going to swap them over when you buy another MTB.
I don’t want to put you off, there is nothing wrong with getting into riding off-road on a low budget but a Walmart bike is not the best way to go.
